For most criminal and traffic matters, your first appearance in the Magistrates' Court is a 'mention'. The charges are put to you and you indicate how you'll plead — guilty or not guilty. It is not the day the whole case is decided.
If you plead not guilty, the matter is adjourned and a contest (hearing) date is set later. If you plead guilty, the court may sentence you that day or adjourn for reports. You can also seek an adjournment to get legal advice or gather materials.
What you say and do at the first mention matters — it can shape the whole case. Speak to a lawyer before you go. Waters & Co. can advise you or appear with you from the first date.
