How does a WorkCover claim work in Victoria?

If you’re injured at work in Victoria, WorkCover can cover medical costs and weekly payments — but you must report the injury and lodge a claim within set timeframes.

Victoria’s WorkCover scheme provides support if you’re injured at work or your work makes you unwell. It can cover reasonable medical and treatment costs and weekly payments if you can’t work or can only work reduced hours.

There are important early steps: report the injury to your employer (there are set timeframes), see a doctor and get a WorkCover certificate of capacity, and lodge your claim. Missing these steps or deadlines can complicate your entitlements.

If your injury is serious and meets the legal threshold, you may also be able to pursue a common-law claim for damages — separate to your statutory WorkCover benefits, and subject to its own rules and deadlines.

WorkCover can be complex and disputes are common. If your claim has been rejected, cut off, or you’re unsure of your rights, our free Claim Check is a good place to start.
